Are You From the Moon?

It was not in sunny California where folks were already pursuing healthier lifestyles. I remember the looks. Knitted eyebrows and smirks were common when I shared a holistic nutrition perspective in numerous venues decades ago. The concept of offering one-on-one nutritional counseling in fitness clubs was often met without a glazed, perplexed stare. (After all, what did nutrition have to do with fitness back then?) Maximizing the nutritional value of food and explaining what processing does was strange talk. An audience hearing about high-quality supplements appeared to be invited to a rocket science convention.
Then, there was the off work times, taking a dish to a dinner party.
“What is that, Susanne?”
“Homemade hummus and a tray of assorted vegetables.”
“What’s in it, tofu?” (guffaws)
What a difference a decade or two makes. I recall the words of Arthur Schopenhauer:
“Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized. In the first it is ridiculed, in the second it is opposed, in the third it is regarded as self-evident.”
Enter the infomercials and magazine ads making supplements household words. Fitness and healthy eating are two peas in a pod. Mainstream docs are telling you to take extra vitamin D. With all the enlightenment, we’re still not there yet. The big health picture is still out of focus. How so in this technologically and chemically-advanced world? Maybe that is the problem. To illustrate, in spite of all the advancements:
Are you sleeping throughout the night, waking up refreshed?
Are you popping prescription or over the counter sleep aids and counting sheep until dawn breaks. Let’s not even mention the zombie feeling.
Are your joints flexible and pain free?
Are you swallowing pain meds, using steroids and rubbing mentholated balms?
Do you have 20/20 or better eyesight without glasses or laser surgery?
The glasses are getting thicker but still are stylish.
Do you have reserves of energy throughout your day and evening?
Those caffeinated drinks are giving a periodic jolt.
Can you perform physical and mental tasks with ease and sharp focus?
Movement “ain’t what it used to be.” They just recalled the Baby Einstein program which was supposed to make geniuses. Preparing long lists are helping your memory for shopping and “to dos.” Wait a minute; where’s my list?
On those days when demands on you are way beyond normal, do you bounce back the next day?
Man, yesterday was a massive marathon. Maybe I’ll recoup in another week or two.
Do you stay at your ideal weight without any depriving or rigorous dieting?
There’s got to be a diet out there or a great bottle of pills that will be the ticket.
Are you eating less, and fully satisfied?
What can I snack on?
Are you maintaining a youthful, radiant appearance?
There’s more wrinkles and less hair on your head.
Restful sleep, flexible joints, better eyesight, bounds of energy, mental sharpness, quick recovery time, ideal weight, enjoyable eating and a glowing appearance are attainable. In combination, we call them health-- the result of balanced, insightful living. The body knows how to heal itself. We learn how to support it and implement that knowledge each day. It’s a simple concept in a complex world.
